The United Arab Emirates sits squarely in one of the world's most extreme climate zones, an arid desert coastline along the Arabian Gulf where summer temperatures push boundaries that most travelers don't encounter anywhere else. Understanding UAE weather is less about tracking four seasons and more about the dramatic swing between a livable winter and a summer that demands real respect. The broad pattern runs like this. From October through April, the UAE is largely comfortable, with warm days and cool nights that make outdoor exploration manageable. By May the heat begins asserting itself in earnest, and from June through September the country enters a period of heat and humidity that locals and long-term expats navigate almost entirely through air conditioning and adjusted schedules. Coastal cities like Dubai and Abu Dhabi add a layer of Gulf humidity that makes the numbers feel more intense than they might suggest. Forty-five degrees Celsius in a humid coastal breeze is a different experience from the same reading in dry desert air inland, and worth preparing for accordingly. Rainfall across the UAE is sparse almost year-round, and when it arrives it tends to come in brief, sometimes dramatic bursts. The country has in recent years experienced the occasional heavy downpour that its drainage infrastructure wasn't originally designed to handle. But for practical purposes visitors should plan as though rain is a rare bonus rather than a scheduling concern.

Best Time to Visit

Recommended timing for different travel styles.

Beach
The best window for beach and relaxation falls between November and March, when daytime highs range from 26°C (78°F) to 32°C (89°F), Gulf waters stay warm enough for comfortable swimming, and evenings are cool enough for outdoor dining without effort. December and January in particular tend to draw the largest crowds for exactly this reason.
Cultural
Cultural exploration rewards the same November-to-March window, since outdoor sites like Al Ain's historic oases and the great mosques of Abu Dhabi are simply more comfortable to walk around in mild weather. This period also coincides with the UAE's main festival season and its most active cultural calendar, though crowds peak accordingly.
Adventure
Adventure and hiking travelers tend to do best in October and November or February and March, the shoulder seasons on either side of the coolest months. These windows are warm enough for active days but before the spring heat arrives. Jebel Jais in Ras Al Khaimah, the country's highest peak, is forgiving in these months in a way it isn't during the summer.
Budget
Budget travelers who can handle the heat often find June through September revealing. Accommodation rates at properties that normally command premium prices drop considerably, and the UAE's indoor attractions, from vast malls to excellent museums and indoor ski slopes, become the entire experience. It's not comfortable in the conventional outdoor-holiday sense, but it's a legitimate way to see the UAE for considerably less.

What to Pack

Essentials and seasonal recommendations for Uae.

Year-Round Essentials
High-factor sun protection
since the desert sun is relentless even in cooler months, and adding a UV-protective lip balm alongside conventional sunscreen is worth the small extra weight.
Quality sunglasses rated for full UV protection
matter more here than in most destinations.
A reusable water bottle
is sensible at any time of year since staying hydrated requires deliberate effort.
Modest clothing items that cover shoulders and knees
are required for visiting mosques and many traditional neighborhoods, so packing at least one such outfit regardless of the season avoids problems.
A light layer for air-conditioned interiors
Pack it even in summer. The UAE's indoor cooling hits hard against outdoor heat. The contrast can be startling. Bring a layer.
winter
Clothing
light layers that can be added or removed
Footwear
Comfortable walking shoes with good support
Accessories
a proper jacket for December and January evenings along the coast
Layering Tip
work better than single-purpose heavier garments.
summer
Clothing
Choose lightweight, loose-fitting fabrics. Natural materials work best. Cotton and linen.
Footwear
Breathable sandals or ventilated footwear
Layering Tip
breathe better under extreme conditions.
Plug Type
Type G
Voltage
220-240V at 50Hz
Adapter Note
North American visitors need two things. Pack a plug adapter and a voltage converter for older devices. Most modern electronics handle the voltage difference automatically. Check before plugging anything in. Avoid surprises.
Skip These Items
Heavy winter coats Formal footwear that's difficult to slip off quickly Clothing with language or imagery that might be considered offensive Aerosol sunscreen in large cans

May

is when the UAE begins earning its reputation. Highs hit 41°C (105°F) and overnight lows sit at 24°C (75°F), meaning there's little relief after dark. Outdoor sightseeing works best in the early morning hours before the heat fully builds.

June

is brutal, and worth saying so plainly. Highs of 45°C (113°F) combined with coastal humidity make outdoor time during the middle of the day something most people simply don't attempt. Lows of 28°C (82°F) at night offer only partial relief. If you're visiting in June, lean into the indoor experience the UAE has built specifically for this season.

July

August

stays near July's extremes with highs of 44°C (111°F) and lows of 30°C (86°F). There's a slight softening toward month's end that doesn't feel dramatic from the outside. But residents often say August begins the long, slow exhale toward autumn.

September

remains demanding with highs of 42°C (107°F) and lows of 28°C (82°F), but the trend is clearly downward. Sunrise and early evening become viable for short outdoor excursions in a way they weren't in the peak summer months.

October

is a welcome arrival. Highs drop to 38°C (100°F) with lows around 25°C (77°F), and the shift feels tangible after four months of extremes. The outdoor terraces that went quiet in summer start reopening, and the UAE begins its slow reactivation.
